The Accidental New Member

What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?

One Sunday, I decided to visit a church for the first time with my children.

When I arrived, I told one of the greeters that I was a first-time guest. Since I had filled out a form on their website beforehand, they escorted me to a table with name cards.

I looked around but couldn’t find mine.

“I don’t see my name,” I said.

“No problem,” they replied, and quickly made me one.

I remember thinking, Wow, this church really knows how to make visitors feel welcome.

They took my two youngest children to the children’s ministry while my oldest and I were escorted to seats near the front of the sanctuary.

So far, everything seemed perfectly normal.

Then, during the service, they asked everyone seated in my section to stand.

We were directed toward the stage.

I smiled, assuming they were introducing first-time guests to the congregation.

The first person walked across the stage.

Then the announcement came:

“These are the individuals who have completed our new members orientation!”

At that moment, I realized there had been a very big misunderstanding.

As they called my name, I quietly tried to slip off the stage and head back to my seat.

They called me back.

So there I was standing with the new members, wondering how I had accidentally joined a class I never attended. 😂

After the service, I explained everything to the pastor. Once he realized what had happened, we both had a good laugh.

It’s still one of the funniest misunderstandings I’ve ever experienced.
